Seventh-tier Wimborne knock Crawley out of FA Cup with 2-0 win
Seventh-tier Wimborne reached the FA Cup second round with a 2-0 victory over Crawley, defeating opponents 57 places above them in the football pyramid. The Guardian reported that the Dorset part-timers eliminated the team bottom of the Football League, while Grimsby and Stockport avoided exits after falling two goals behind in their own first-round ties.
Watch the highlights:
Yang Seung-woo put Wimborne ahead in the ninth minute with a curling shot from inside the penalty area. The goalscorer, who works as a property surveyor, found the top corner to give the hosts an early advantage. Crawley then threatened through Kai Jennings, whose low effort went narrowly wide, and Jonny Russell, whose header was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Cam Plain.
Crawley's interim manager Kevin Blackwell made three changes at half-time, and Charlie Barker subsequently shot just wide. The visitors could not convert those chances into an equaliser. Instead, Wimborne secured their second goal with 11 minutes remaining when Jackson King's shot struck Cameron Munn and deflected beyond goalkeeper Vito Mannone, completing the upset.
Elsewhere, eighth-tier Stafford Rangers took Grimsby to penalties after a 3-3 draw following extra time. Darrhyl Mason, a firefighter, and Jack Birch, an Aston Villa youth coach, gave Stafford a 2-0 lead in front of 3,130 spectators. Grimsby recovered through headers from Harvey Rodgers and Maldini Kacurri within three minutes of each other, forcing the tie beyond normal time.
Mason scored again during extra time, with Géza Turi also finding the net before Grimsby won the shootout 3-2. Stafford debutant Luca Navarro needed to convert his penalty to force sudden death, but Harvey Cartwright saved it. The result ended Stafford's nine-match cup campaign after they had pushed opponents 89 places above them to a shootout.
Stockport also recovered from two goals down, beating Cray Wanderers 3-2 after extra time despite goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond's first-half dismissal. Sammie MacLeod and Alex Hernandez scored for Cray, before Kyle Wootton and Mikael Mandron brought Stockport level late in normal time. Lewis Fiorini converted the decisive penalty in the 101st minute after Cray goalkeeper JJ Briggs fouled Mandron, sending the League One side through.
