Jangoo unbeaten on 111 as West Indies recover to 235 for four in Sylhet
Amir Jangoo finished unbeaten on 111 as West Indies recovered from 27 for three to reach 235 for four on the opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet on Thursday. AFP reported that bad light ended play after 70 overs, with Justin Greaves alongside him on 35. West Indies entered the match holding a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
Watch the highlights:
Bangladesh initially made the visitors' decision to bat look costly. Taskin Ahmed bowled Brandon King for nine, Hasan Mahmud removed Kavem Hodge for one, and Taskin trapped Joshua Da Silva leg-before for 12. The three dismissals left West Indies needing to rebuild before the first hour was over, but Bangladesh would take only one more wicket during the rest of the day.
Debutant Kevin Wickham supplied the support Jangoo needed, contributing 61 to a fourth-wicket partnership worth 131. CaribbeanCricket.com reported that illness had ruled out John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, prompting changes to the visiting batting order. Wickham said he had been told to prepare for a possible opportunity the previous evening and learned that he would make his Test debut on the morning of the match.
Wickham described an initially nervous experience that became easier once the new-ball spell was over. In comments reported by CaribbeanCricket.com, he credited Jangoo with encouraging patience and confidence in his defence against the greater consistency of Test bowling. The pair carried West Indies to lunch on 86 for three before Hasan eventually bowled Wickham, ending his 145-ball innings with the total at 158.
Jangoo continued after that breakthrough, reaching his second Test hundred by hitting Taijul Islam for six. He faced 171 deliveries and struck 11 fours and two sixes. Greaves helped add an unbroken 77 for the fifth wicket, ensuring the recovery continued after the partnership with Wickham had ended.
The BBC scorecard recorded figures of two for 61 for Taskin and two for 58 for Hasan. Bangladesh's three spinners finished without a wicket: Mehidy Hasan Miraz conceded 42 runs, Taijul 45 and Nayeem Hasan 27. Jangoo and Greaves remained unbeaten at the close, with six West Indies first-innings wickets still available.
