Mooney and King lead Scorchers to 17-run win over Thunder
Beth Mooney made an unbeaten 80 and Alana King took four wickets as Perth Scorchers beat Sydney Thunder by 17 runs. Perth maintained their unbeaten start to the WBBL season.

Perth Scorchers beat Sydney Thunder by 17 runs at Drummoyne Oval on Thursday, with Beth Mooney's unbeaten 80 and Alana King's four wickets decisive in the Women's Big Bash League contest. Perth posted 183 for three before dismissing Sydney for 166 in 19 overs, a result confirmed by BBC Sport's scorecard.

Watch the highlights:

Mooney faced 55 balls and struck eight fours and a six, providing the foundation for Perth's total after Thunder won the toss and chose to field. The opener remained at the crease throughout the innings. Katie Mack contributed 10, while Sophie Devine made 42 from 39 deliveries before retiring out late in the innings.

According to the Scorchers' match report, Devine ended her innings after the 17th over to give Freya Kemp an opportunity to accelerate. Her partnership with Mooney had produced 85 runs. Kemp then scored 30 from just 10 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes before Georgia Voll caught her off Hannah Darlington's bowling.

Thunder's reply suffered an immediate setback when Chloe Ainsworth bowled Voll with the first delivery. Phoebe Litchfield contributed 34, Anika Learoyd made 22 and Heather Knight added 27, but Sydney lost wickets throughout the chase. Tahlia Wilson scored 25 and Laura Harris hit 29 from 12 balls, giving the lower middle order a rapid contribution without taking the match away from Perth.

King recovered from an expensive start to finish with four for 35 from her four overs. The club reported that her opening over cost 17 runs, but she later bowled Harris and took three wickets in the 19th over to end the innings. Hannah Darlington, Jemma Barsby and Sam Bates were her final three victims. Ainsworth supported her with two for 24.

The victory gave Perth three wins from three matches under Mooney's full-time captaincy and ended Thunder's unbeaten start, according to the Scorchers. Mooney received the player-of-the-match award after carrying her bat, while King moved to eight wickets for the competition. Perth's batting acceleration and late wickets secured a win with an over of Sydney's allocated innings still unused.
