Chris Lynn served one-month ban after positive T20 Blast Finals Day test
Chris Lynn has already served a one-month suspension after a drug test at this season's T20 Blast Finals Day detected a cocaine metabolite. BBC Sport reported on Thursday that the former Australia batter's case had been announced by the Cricket Regulator. His ban ran from July 31 to August 30, rather than beginning with the public disclosure.
Watch the highlights:
The regulator's written decision, dated November 2, records that Lynn was tested in competition at Edgbaston on July 18. His urine sample returned an adverse finding for benzoylecgonine. In his response, Lynn acknowledged taking cocaine during the evening of July 15 and early hours of July 16. The regulator accepted that the use occurred outside competition and was unrelated to sports performance.
BBC Sport reported that Lynn, 36, scored 39 to lead Northamptonshire's batting in their semi-final victory over Somerset, then made four in the final against Hampshire. The Steelbacks won both matches. Lynn had returned to the county for 2026 after two earlier spells in 2022 and 2023, during which he accumulated 880 T20 runs.
The written decision also distinguishes the final finding from the original charges. On October 21, the regulator withdrew the use charge and the charge concerning cocaine itself, whose reported concentration was below the applicable minimum reporting level. Lynn continued to accept the remaining breach, under Article 2.1, relating to the presence of benzoylecgonine in his sample.
Lynn's completion of a substance-of-abuse treatment programme reduced the suspension from three months to one month, BBC Sport reported. That meant the period already served covered the sanction. The broadcaster said Northamptonshire had been approached for comment and reported the regulator's confirmation that the club would receive no sanction over the positive test.
The regulator received confirmation of the completed treatment on October 30. Its decision disqualifies Lynn's individual results between July 18 and July 31 but says the rules do not require a sanction against Northampton Steelbacks. It describes the decision as final, subject to an appeal by an eligible party under the anti-doping rules.
