Daniil Medvedev Stuns World Number One Alcaraz as Jannik Sinner Cruises Into Indian Wells Final
The Russian veteran delivered a masterclass to defeat Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 7-6(3) while Jannik Sinner dominated Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 to set up a compelling California final.

Daniil Medvedev produced one of his finest performances to stun world number one Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 7-6(3), while Jannik Sinner dismantled Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 in contrasting Indian Wells semifinals that delivered a dream final pairing for Sunday.

Medvedev exceptional display ended Alcaraz perfect start to 2026, extending his own winning streak to nine matches following his Dubai Tennis Championship title. The 2021 US Open champion appeared inspired against the Spanish superstar, converting both break-point opportunities in the opening set before prevailing in a second-set tiebreak.

Its an amazing feeling to beat someone like Carlos - the number one in the world, Medvedev reflected. In a way, when you play him or Jannik or Novak, it doesnt matter the ranking. Its just a great feeling to play them, and to beat them, of course, is even better.

The Russian, who had defeated defending champion Jack Draper in the quarterfinals, demonstrated the tactical acumen and court craft that has made him one of tennis most dangerous opponents. His performance left Alcaraz searching for explanations after witnessing a level he had never previously encountered.

I just have to give credit to Daniil, Alcaraz admitted graciously. I think he just played an amazing match. Since the start until the end, he was playing unreal. I have never seen, to be honest, playing Daniil like this.

While Medvedev was executing the upset of the tournament, Sinner was delivering a clinical masterclass on the adjacent court. The world number two needed just one hour and 23 minutes to dispatch Zverev, improving his head-to-head record against the German to 7-4.

The Italian has endured a frustrating start to 2026, failing to reach a final before Indian Wells despite his lofty ranking. His dominant performance suggested he has rediscovered the form that made him one of tennis most consistent performers.

It was a great performance - very solid from the back of the court. I tried to go for shots and that felt like one of the keys, Sinner explained. He has a huge serve so I tried to mix it up. From my side I was very precise and it was a solid performance.

Sinner established complete control in the opening set, dropping just four points on serve while breaking Zverev twice. His return game proved devastating, particularly on second serves where he won six of eight opportunities to immediately put pressure on his opponent.

The 24-year-old now has the opportunity to become just the third man in tennis history - after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic - to capture all six ATP Masters 1000 hard-court titles. Having won 21 of his 24 career titles on hard courts, the surface clearly suits his aggressive baseline approach.

Zverev fought valiantly to save three break points in the opening service game of the second set, but ultimately succumbed when trailing 4-3. The remainder of the match stayed on serve, though the outcome had effectively been decided by Sinners early dominance.

I thought the match would be more physical but when both serve well its difficult to get into a rhythm with short points, Sinner noted, highlighting the tactical battle that never fully materialized.

Medvedevs victory represents his third Indian Wells final appearance, having finished as runner-up twice previously. The seasoned campaigner appears to be peaking at precisely the right moment, combining his natural court intelligence with improved physical conditioning.

Sundays final promises compelling tennis between two players in exceptional form, with contrasting styles and motivations creating an intriguing dynamic for the prestigious California title.

For Sinner, victory would provide validation after early-season struggles and complete a significant milestone in his career progression toward tennis elite tier.
