Medvedev Stuns Alcaraz While Sinner Dominates Zverev to Set Up Indian Wells Final Showdown
Daniil Medvedev ended Carlos Alcaraz winning streak with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory while Jannik Sinner cruised past Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 to reach his first Indian Wells final.

Daniil Medvedev delivered a masterful performance to end Carlos Alcaraz perfect start to 2026, defeating the world number one 6-3, 7-6(3) in the Indian Wells semifinals, while Jannik Sinner dominated Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 to set up a compelling final between two in-form champions.

Medvedev exceptional display against the reigning Australian Open champion showcased the veteran Russian at his very best, extending his current winning streak to nine matches following his Dubai Tennis Championship triumph last month.

Its an amazing feeling to beat someone like Carlos - the number one in the world, Medvedev reflected afterward. In a way, when you play him or Jannik or Novak it doesnt matter the ranking. Its just a great feeling to play them, and to beat them, of course, is even better.

The 2021 US Open champion seized control early by converting both break-point opportunities in the opening set, establishing a commanding rhythm that troubled Alcaraz throughout the encounter. When the second set reached a tiebreak, Medvedev maintained his composure to close out a memorable victory.

Alcaraz, who had been seeking to extend his remarkable winning streak that began with his Australian Open triumph, graciously acknowledged his opponents exceptional level.

I just have to give credit to Daniil, the Spaniard admitted. I think he just played an amazing match. Since the start of the match until the end of the match, he was playing unreal, I got to say. I have never seen, to be honest, playing Daniil like this.

The victory propels Medvedev into his third Indian Wells final, having previously finished as runner-up twice. The Russian veteran, who defeated defending champion Jack Draper in the quarterfinals, appears to be peaking at precisely the right moment.

Meanwhile, Sinner continued his impressive hard-court form by dismantling Zverev in just one hour and 23 minutes. The world number two has struggled for consistency early in 2026, failing to reach a final prior to Indian Wells, making this breakthrough particularly significant.

It was a great performance - very solid from the back of the court. I tried to go for shots and that felt like one of the keys, Sinner explained. He has a huge serve so I tried to mix it up. From my side I was very precise and it was a solid performance.

The Italian established complete dominance from the opening set, dropping just four points on his own serve while breaking Zverev twice. His return game proved devastating, particularly on second serves where he won six of eight opportunities in the first set.

Sinner now stands on the brink of achieving a rare milestone, as victory would make him just the third man in tennis history - after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic - to capture all six ATP Masters 1000 hard-court titles. Having won 21 of his 24 career titles on hard courts, the surface clearly suits his aggressive baseline style.

Zverev struggled to find any rhythm against the relentless Italian pressure, saving three break points in the second sets opening game before ultimately succumbing to trail 4-3. The remainder of the match stayed on serve, but the damage had already been inflicted.

The German acknowledged the tactical battle afterward, noting how Sinners precision and shot selection disrupted his own game plan. The 28-year-old now leads their head-to-head series 7-4, demonstrating his consistent superiority in their recent encounters.

For Sinner, reaching his maiden Indian Wells final represents validation after a frustrating start to the season. The 24-year-old has endured several early exits in 2026, making this deep run particularly satisfying as he targets his first significant title of the year.

Sundays final promises to deliver compelling tennis between two players in excellent form, with Medvedev seeking his first Indian Wells title and Sinner aiming to complete his hard-court Masters collection while claiming a prestigious California crown.
