Daniil Medvedev Stuns World Number One Alcaraz as Jannik Sinner Sets Up Indian Wells Final Showdown
The Russian defeated Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets while Italian world number two Sinner dominated Alexander Zverev to reach his first Indian Wells final in pursuit of his elusive hard court Masters title.

Daniil Medvedev delivered a masterful performance to defeat world number one Carlos Alcaraz and advance to the Indian Wells final, where he will face Jannik Sinner in a blockbuster showdown between two of tennis most formidable hard court players.

The 2021 US Open champion extended his current winning streak to nine matches by overcoming Alcaraz in straight sets, taking both break point opportunities in the opening frame before securing victory through a second-set tiebreak. Medvedev success continues his remarkable form following last month Dubai Tennis Championship triumph.

It is an amazing feeling to beat someone like Carlos - the number one in the world, Medvedev reflected after his semifinal victory. In a way, when you play him or Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic it does not matter the ranking. It is just a great feeling to play them, and to beat them, of course, is even better.

Alcaraz, who had been defending champion Jack Draper earlier victim in the quarterfinals, acknowledged the exceptional level of tennis displayed by his opponent. I just have to give credit to Daniil, the Spanish star admitted. I think he just played an amazing match. Since the start of the match until the end of the match, he was playing unreal, I got to say. I have never seen, to be honest, playing Daniil like this.

Meanwhile, world number two Jannik Sinner showcased his dominance on hard courts by dismantling Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 in just one hour and 23 minutes. The Italian performance highlighted why he has captured 21 of his 24 career titles on hard court surfaces.

Sinner victory positions him to potentially join an elite group of players, as he aims to become only the third man after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to capture all six ATP Masters 1000 hard court titles. The achievement would mark a significant milestone in his rapidly ascending career.

It was a great performance - very solid from the back of the court. I tried to go for shots and that felt like one of the keys, Sinner explained. He has a huge serve so I tried to mix it up. From my side I was very precise and it was a solid performance.

The 24-year-old Italian had endured a frustrating start to 2026, failing to reach a final prior to Indian Wells, making this breakthrough particularly satisfying. His clinical dismantling of Zverev demonstrated the form that has made him one of tennis most consistent performers.

Sinner established complete control during the opening set, dropping just four points on serve while securing two crucial breaks. His return game proved particularly effective against Zverev second serves, winning six of eight return points to establish early momentum.

I thought the match would be more physical but when both serve well it is difficult to get into a rhythm with short points, Sinner observed about his tactical approach against the German.

Zverev, ranked fourth in the world, struggled to find his serving rhythm throughout the encounter. The 28-year-old showed resilience by saving three break points in the second set opening service game, but ultimately succumbed to Sinner pressure when broken to trail 4-3.

The final promises an intriguing stylistic matchup between Medvedev tactical brilliance and court craft against Sinner explosive power and precision. Both players enter the championship match carrying significant momentum and confidence from their semifinal performances.

For Sinner, the Indian Wells final represents an opportunity to claim what many consider an overdue title by his elevated standards. His recent struggles to reach finals make this achievement particularly meaningful as he seeks to add another prestigious hard court crown to his collection.

Medvedev, meanwhile, will aim to continue his exceptional recent form and capture another Masters 1000 title to further cement his position among tennis elite competitors on hard courts.
