Monaco Stall on Ansu Fati Deal as Barcelona Summer Rebuild Hits Another Snag
Barcelona's summer overhaul is facing fresh complications after reports emerged that Monaco are hesitating on triggering their option to sign Ansu Fati permanently.
The Spain international has spent the season on loan at Monaco after falling out of favour at the Catalan club, and while the Ligue 1 side hold a reported 11 million euro buy option they are willing to exercise, a resolution on personal terms remains elusive.
According to journalist Andi Onrubia, Monaco are unwilling to commit to Fati's current salary demands, which have been partially subsidised by Barcelona throughout his loan spell. Sources suggest Monaco are dealing with financial pressures affecting French football clubs broadly, and are reluctant to make an excessive offer for a player yet to fully establish himself in their starting eleven.
For Barcelona, the stakes are considerable. The club are planning a significant recruitment drive heading into the new season and need several high-earning players to depart in order to create wage bill flexibility. Fati's exit would go a long way toward making those ambitions feasible.
The 23-year-old's situation presents something of a paradox. His performances in France have been solid without being spectacular, and whether he has done enough to earn a permanent deal at one of Europe's most ambitious clubs remains debatable. Monaco clearly see enough potential to trigger their option, but only if Fati accepts terms that would represent a notable reduction on his current earnings.
Should Fati reject Monaco's conditions, the path back to Barcelona appears blocked. Sources close to the club indicate Hansi Flick has no intention of reintegrating the forward into his first-team plans, meaning a return to Catalonia would only accelerate the search for a permanent buyer.
The coming weeks will be critical. Fati must weigh up whether playing regularly in France justifies a substantial pay cut, or whether holding out for better terms might leave him in limbo ahead of next season. For Barcelona, the outcome could determine just how ambitious their summer dealings can be.
