Barcelona’s Summer Transfer Plans Hit Complication as Monaco Weigh Up Ansu Fati Move
Barcelona want to raise funds for a major summer rebuild, but their ability to bring in new signings depends heavily on whether Ansu Fati agrees to a permanent switch to Monaco — a deal that now hangs in the balance over salary demands.

Barcelona are dreaming big for the summer transfer window. Multiple marquee signings are on the club’s agenda, but Catalonia’s giants know they cannot spend freely — players must leave before others can arrive. Several high-profile names including Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Marc Casado and Robert Lewandowski have been heavily linked with exits from the Spotify Camp Nou, and another who could permanently depart is Ansu Fati.

Fati has not been part of Hansi Flick’s plans for some time now. The 23-year-old was sent out on loan to AS Monaco last summer and has done reasonably well in French football. But Monaco now hold a decisive position over his future — they have an €11 million buy option that they are willing to activate, but only if personal terms can be agreed first.

That agreement appears far from straightforward. According to journalist Andi Onrubia, speaking on Cadena SER, Monaco are willing to offer Fati around €250,000 net per month. The problem? Barcelona are currently paying a portion of Fati’s salary, and the combined package remains unaffordable for the Monegasque club given the financial crisis sweeping French football.

"Monaco are not going to commit a crazy thing or overpay for the Spanish international," Onrubia explained. "For Ansu to continue at the Monegasque team, the most important thing is that they reach an agreement and his salary is significantly lowered."

Fati faces a clear choice: take a substantial wage cut and continue his career in France, or reject Monaco’s terms and return to Barcelona this summer. If he returns, things become very complicated. Barcelona have no intention of reintegrating him into Flick’s squad, meaning the club would need to find yet another exit route — no easy task for a player carrying such high wage demands.

The stakes extend beyond Fati himself. Barcelona are understood to be counting on his permanent departure to free up sufficient salary space for new signings. If Monaco walk away or Fati refuses to compromise, Barcelona’s grand summer plans could be significantly undermined before they have even begun.
