Rooney Predicts Manchester City Will Edge Out Arsenal in Premier League Title Race
Wayne Rooney says Manchester City will have the psychological edge when Arsenal visit the Etihad on Sunday in what promises to be the most significant match of the Premier League season.
Arsenal go into the clash six points clear at the top of the table, though they have played one game more than City. The Gunners stumbled badly at the weekend, slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth that handed City a lifeline. City capitalized immediately, thumping Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday, closing the gap to just three points with five games remaining. Sunday’s showdown in Manchester could effectively decide the destination of the trophy.
Rooney, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, was blunt about where the advantage lies. "I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players. They know how to win the title and have a manager who knows how to do it."
The former England captain also issued a stark warning about the mental toll of a title race. "They will be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘where’s the next goal, the next win going from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance."
Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004 — more than two decades of waiting. City, by contrast, have been serial champions under Pep Guardiola, winning the league in four of the last five seasons. That experience counts for something when the pressure ramps up in April.
Rooney suggested that a draw would be a useful result for Arsenal, though he stopped short of predicting the outcome directly. He did, however, offer Mikel Arteta’s side some pointed tactical advice. "Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring, be tough to break down, make sure there’s no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break."
The stakes could not be higher. Whoever emerges victorious at the Etihad will be positioned strongly to take the title. City have the pedigree, the manager and the know-how. Arsenal have the lead but carry the weight of a generations-long drought. Sunday’s result will tell us a great deal about which way this extraordinary title race is heading.
