Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Homers Twice as Blue Jays Defeat Red Sox 8-5 in Spring Training
The Toronto slugger shows off his power with two home runs and four RBIs in an impressive Grapefruit League performance at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. put on a power display that has Blue Jays fans dreaming of big things in 2026, launching two home runs and driving in four runs to lead Toronto to an 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park on Sunday afternoon. The 27-year-old first baseman's impressive spring performance continued as he showed the form that made him one of baseball's most feared hitters just a few years ago.

Guerrero opened his account with a towering three-run homer in the third inning, sending a 95-mph fastball from Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock an estimated 435 feet over the left-center field wall. The Dominican slugger wasn't finished there, adding a solo blast in the sixth inning that showcased the opposite-field power that has become his trademark.

"Vlad looks locked in right now," said Blue Jays manager John Schneider after the victory. "His swing mechanics are exactly where we want them to be, and you can see the confidence building with every at-bat. When he's seeing the ball like this, he's one of the most dangerous hitters in the game."

The performance was particularly encouraging for Toronto, who are counting on Guerrero to anchor their lineup as they pursue their first playoff appearance since 2023. The former MVP candidate has been working with hitting coach Guillermo Martinez on refining his approach at the plate, focusing on being more selective while maintaining his natural power stroke.

Guerrero's spring resurgence comes after a disappointing 2025 season that saw him struggle with consistency and injuries. The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr. appears to have regained the swing that made him a 48-home run threat in 2021, when he nearly won the American League MVP award.

"I feel really good at the plate right now," Guerrero said through a translator during his post-game interview. "I've been working hard with Memo [Martinez] on my mechanics and my approach. The results are starting to show, and I'm excited about what this season can bring for our team."

The Blue Jays' offensive explosion also featured contributions from Bo Bichette, who had three hits and two RBIs, and George Springer, who added a solo home run in the seventh inning. The balanced attack was exactly what Toronto's coaching staff wanted to see as they fine-tune their lineup for the regular season opener in three weeks.

For the Red Sox, the loss was overshadowed by a solid performance from their bullpen, which allowed just one run over the final four innings. Boston is still working to finalize their starting rotation, with several pitchers competing for the final two spots in what has been a competitive spring battle.

With 12 home runs in 18 Grapefruit League games, Guerrero is leading all of Major League Baseball in spring training long balls. If he can carry this form into the regular season, the Blue Jays could find themselves back in playoff contention in what promises to be a competitive American League East division.
