Bryce Harper Homers in Return from Elbow Surgery as Phillies Beat Braves 7-4
The former MVP launches a two-run blast in his first spring training game since October surgery, providing hope for Philadelphia's championship aspirations.

Bryce Harper made a triumphant return to game action on Sunday afternoon, launching a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater. The 31-year-old slugger, playing his first game since undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last October, showed no signs of rust as he went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in an encouraging spring debut.

Harper's home run, a 420-foot blast to left-center field off Braves reliever Jesse Chavez, brought the capacity crowd to its feet and validated months of rigorous rehabilitation work. The former National League MVP had been cleared to return to game action just last week after extensive testing showed his surgically repaired elbow was fully healed.

"It felt incredible to be back out there competing," Harper said after the game, clearly emotional about his return. "The elbow feels great, no pain at all. To get that first hit and then the home run – I couldn't have scripted it any better. This organization and these fans deserve a championship, and I'm ready to help make that happen."

Phillies manager Rob Thomson had been cautiously optimistic about Harper's recovery timeline, but was clearly pleased with what he witnessed on Sunday. The veteran skipper had watched Harper take hundreds of at-bats in simulated games and batting practice, but seeing him perform against live pitching provided the final confirmation that his star player was ready for the rigors of a full season.

"Bryce looked like Bryce out there today," Thomson said during his post-game press conference. "His swing mechanics were perfect, his timing was there, and most importantly, he felt comfortable and confident. Having him back in our lineup changes everything about our championship expectations for 2026."

The Phillies scored early and often against Atlanta's pitching staff, with Trea Turner adding a solo home run in the third inning and Nick Castellanos contributing two RBIs with a double in the seventh. The offensive explosion was exactly what Philadelphia's front office wanted to see as they prepare for what they hope will be a deep playoff run.

Atlanta managed to keep pace early behind strong hitting from Ronald Acuna Jr., who had two hits and two stolen bases in his own impressive spring performance. However, the Braves' bullpen struggled to contain Philadelphia's powerful lineup once Harper entered the game in the fourth inning.

Harper's successful return represents a massive boost for the Phillies' World Series aspirations after the team fell short in the playoffs last season despite high expectations. His presence in the middle of the lineup alongside Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Castellanos gives Philadelphia one of baseball's most formidable offensive units.

With the regular season still three weeks away, Harper is expected to gradually increase his playing time as he continues to build stamina and timing. However, his performance on Sunday suggests he'll be ready to resume his role as one of baseball's premier sluggers when the games begin counting in late March.
