Fernando Tatis Jr. Homers Twice as Padres Defeat Giants 9-4 in Spring Training Showcase
Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered a spectacular performance with two home runs and four RBIs to lead the San Diego Padres to a convincing 9-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Peoria Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. The dynamic shortstop's explosive display provided further evidence that he's fully recovered from the shoulder surgery that limited him last season.
Tatis opened his account with a towering three-run homer in the second inning off Giants starter Logan Webb, sending the ball an estimated 445 feet over the left-center field wall. The 27-year-old wasn't finished there, adding a solo blast in the sixth inning that showcased the raw power that has made him one of baseball's most exciting players.
"Tatis looked incredible out there today," said Padres manager Mike Shildt after the victory. "His swing mechanics are back to where they were before the injury, and you can see the confidence returning with every at-bat. When he's healthy and locked in like this, he's as dangerous as any hitter in baseball."
The performance was particularly encouraging for San Diego, who are counting on Tatis to anchor their lineup as they pursue their first World Series championship. The former All-Star missed significant time in 2025 due to shoulder issues but appears to have regained the explosive bat speed and timing that made him a superstar.
Manny Machado added two RBIs for the Padres, while top prospect Jackson Merrill continued his impressive spring with three hits and two runs scored. The offensive explosion came against a Giants pitching staff that has been among the better units in the National League, making the performance even more impressive.
"It feels great to be back out there feeling like myself again," Tatis said during his post-game interview. "The shoulder feels strong, my timing is coming back, and I'm just excited to help this team win games. Spring training is about getting ready for the season, and I feel like I'm right where I need to be."
San Francisco struggled to contain San Diego's potent offense, with Webb allowing six runs in just 3.2 innings pitched. The Giants managed to score four runs thanks to home runs from Matt Chapman and LaMonte Wade Jr., but their pitching couldn't match the Padres' firepower.
The victory extends San Diego's strong start to Cactus League play, where they now sport a 12-8 record. More importantly, the return to form from Tatis gives the organization tremendous optimism heading into the regular season, which begins in just three weeks.
Padres fans who made the trip to Arizona were treated to a preview of what could be a special season if Tatis remains healthy. His combination of power, speed, and defensive ability at shortstop makes him one of the game's most valuable players when at full strength.
The Padres will continue their spring schedule on Tuesday when they face the Los Angeles Angels, with Tatis expected to play five innings as he continues building up his stamina for the regular season.
