Igor Shesterkin Records 50th Win of Season as Rangers Beat Devils 4-1
Igor Shesterkin etched his name in NHL history books on Sunday night, becoming the youngest goaltender since Martin Brodeur to record 50 wins in a single season as the New York Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-1 at Madison Square Garden.
The 28-year-old Russian netminder was virtually unbeatable throughout the contest, making 34 saves and allowing just one goal to reach the coveted 50-win milestone in his 56th appearance of the season. Shesterkin's stellar performance included several spectacular saves that drew roars from the sellout Garden crowd.
"Fifty wins is something every goaltender dreams about," Shesterkin said through a translator after the game. "But it's not just about me - it's about this team and how hard everyone works in front of me. The guys make my job easier every night, and I'm grateful to be part of this group."
Artemi Panarin led the Rangers' offensive attack with two goals and an assist, while Chris Kreider and Vincent Trocheck also found the back of the net. New York controlled play from the opening faceoff, outshooting New Jersey 38-35 and never allowing the Devils to establish sustained pressure in their defensive zone.
The Devils' lone goal came from Jack Hughes in the second period, but Shesterkin quickly slammed the door shut and preserved his milestone victory. Hughes' goal snapped Shesterkin's shutout streak at 147 minutes and 23 seconds, but the Rangers goaltender remained in complete control throughout the remainder of the match.
The victory moves the Rangers to 40-15-3 on the season and extends their lead atop the Metropolitan Division. Shesterkin's remarkable season continues to fuel Vezina Trophy discussions, as his combination of wins, save percentage, and goals-against average puts him among the elite goaltenders in the NHL. With the playoffs approaching, the Rangers appear to have found their championship formula behind their exceptional netminder and balanced offensive attack.
