Medvedev secures ATP Finals return with straight-sets win in Vienna
Daniil Medvedev secured a return to the ATP Finals on Friday by beating Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 in the Vienna quarter-finals. The ATP confirmed that the 30-year-old had qualified for the season-ending tournament for a seventh time, ending a one-year absence from the field. The result also sent him into Vienna's semi-finals.
Watch the highlights:
According to the Erste Bank Open's match report, Medvedev took control early against the French qualifier, breaking in Mannarino's opening service game. A further break moved him ahead 5-2 before he served out the first set. In the second, he broke for 4-3 and completed victory on his second match point while returning serve.
The win came in Medvedev's 100th tour-level quarter-final and followed a much closer encounter in the previous round. The third seed, who won the Vienna title in 2022, had saved a match point against Cameron Norrie. Against Mannarino, he credited his success on the important points after a contest featuring extended rallies and low, flat hitting.
Medvedev qualified for six consecutive ATP Finals between 2019 and 2024 before missing the 2025 edition. He will now return to Turin's Inalpi Arena for the November 15-22 tournament. The ATP lists his record at the event as 12 wins and 11 defeats; he won the title in 2020 and finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev in 2021.
His qualification follows a season in which he has passed 50 wins for the first time since 2023. He has collected titles in Brisbane, Dubai, Hangzhou and Almaty, bringing his career tour-level total to 25. He also reached the Indian Wells final after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, according to the ATP's qualification announcement.
Alcaraz is also Medvedev's next opponent in Vienna after defeating Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). The tournament reported that Paul failed to convert break opportunities in both sets, while Alcaraz took charge of the tie-break. The victory put the Spaniard into his 50th tour-level semi-final and his first at the Austrian event in five years.
