Zverev beats Fery in 58 minutes to reach Vienna semi-finals
Alexander Zverev defeated Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 to reach the Vienna Open semi-finals as he prepares to become world number one. Daniil Medvedev also advanced and secured his ATP Finals place.

Alexander Zverev reached the Vienna Open semi-finals with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Britain's Arthur Fery, taking just 58 minutes to complete the quarter-final. BBC Sport reported that the German top seed is set to replace Jannik Sinner as world number one, adding a rankings milestone to his progress in Austria.

Watch the highlights:

Zverev's serve gave Fery little opportunity to establish a foothold. He lost only six points on serve across the match and converted five of the nine break points he created. Those figures reflected the gap between the players on the day, with Fery unable to win a game in the opening set before taking two in the second.

Fery, 24, had beaten Lorenzo Musetti in the previous round, repeating his success against the former world number five at Wimbledon earlier this year. However, BBC Sport noted that he had required treatment on his leg late in Thursday's last-16 match and did not appear at his best against Zverev. The report did not establish a specific injury diagnosis.

The quarter-final also reunited the opponents from this summer's Wimbledon semi-final, which Zverev won in straight sets. Despite another emphatic scoreline, Zverev praised Fery's tactical ability and encouraged him to recognise his achievements in his first year on tour. The British player's Vienna run ended in the last eight after another victory over Musetti.

Zverev is pursuing a third title of the year following his French Open and US Open victories. His forthcoming move to the top of the rankings will make him the second German man to hold that position, after Boris Becker in 1991. His next opponent in Vienna will be either Australian fifth seed Alex de Minaur or Italy's Matteo Berrettini.

The other semi-final is set, with Carlos Alcaraz facing Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), while Medvedev defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3. Medvedev's win also clinched his seventh appearance at the season-ending ATP Finals, joining Zverev, Alcaraz and Ben Shelton among the players already qualified, according to BBC Sport.
