Kelly Bailie signs off with winning penalty as Glentoran lift Challenge Cup
Kelly Bailie ended her 30 years with Glentoran by converting the penalty that secured the Women's Challenge Cup against Cliftonville at Windsor Park. The 46-year-old scored the decisive spot-kick in a 4-2 shootout victory after a goalless final, according to BBC Sport NI's match report by Jana McCabe.
Watch the highlights:
The final had been postponed by three days because of Storm Boelo. It also followed Cliftonville being stripped of their League Cup title for fielding two ineligible players against Glentoran, BBC Sport NI reported. Once the delayed match began, neither side could find a goal to settle the contest before penalties.
Cliftonville created early danger when Kirsty McGuinness' deflected effort went narrowly wide after leaving goalkeeper Ellie Scott wrong-footed. They had more of the ball as the first half developed, but Glentoran's defence kept them out. McGuinness missed the target again after Charlotte Havern picked her out with a pass just beyond the half-hour.
Havern also supplied a delivery that Caitlin McGuinness headed towards goal, only for the ball to be blocked by her own team-mate Vicky Carleton. After the interval, Naomi McLaughlin sent two attempts over the bar in quick succession. Louise McDaniel and Caitlin McGuinness subsequently had half-chances as Cliftonville continued trying to break through.
Carleton had a clear opportunity in the 68th minute following a ball from Caitlin McGuinness, but failed to put her effort on target. Late chances also went unconverted: Danielle Maxwell could not finish a move involving both McGuinness players, while Mia Moore spotted goalkeeper Maddy Harvey-Clifford off her line and shot just wide.
Scott then kept Glentoran level with a late save from Toni-Leigh Finnegan, denying Cliftonville a winner before the shootout. Jess Foy converted the first penalty, while Caitlin McGuinness missed. Demi Vance and Carleton also failed to score, before Aimee Kerr and Finnegan each converted to keep the contest moving towards its decisive kicks.
Faye Loughan and Anna Rose Robinson were the next players to score, leaving Bailie to take the penalty that clinched the trophy. Her successful effort completed Glentoran's 4-2 shootout win and brought her final match for the east Belfast club to a close with the Challenge Cup secured.
