Fleetwood eliminate Arsenal on penalties to reach first League Cup quarter-final
Fleetwood Town knocked out Arsenal after a 1-1 draw to reach the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time. Conor Haughey converted the decisive penalty as the League Two side overcame the reigning Premier League champions.

Fleetwood Town reached the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time after eliminating Arsenal on penalties at Highbury on Tuesday. BBC Sport reported that Conor Haughey scored the decisive spot-kick, completing a victory over the reigning Premier League champions following a 1-1 draw.

Watch the highlights:

Aaron Loupalo-Bi put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute before Viktor Gyokeres equalised after half-time. Fleetwood then held on to take the tie to a shootout, with goalkeeper Jay Lynch helping them through and supporters entering the pitch after Haughey secured their place in the next round.

The result came against a difficult domestic backdrop for Matt Lawlor's side. Fleetwood were 18th in League Two and had won only once in eight league matches. They had also lost their previous two games, conceding four goals at Cheltenham and another two at Exeter before welcoming Arsenal.

Arsenal's numerical dominance did not produce a winning goal. BBC Sport recorded 26 shots and 78% possession for the visitors, who finished with 10 players after Max Dowman's dismissal. The 16-year-old was shown a red card following his reaction to a challenge by Harrison Neal, bringing an early end to his second start of the season.

Mikel Arteta had selected several inexperienced players alongside established internationals. Ceadach O'Neill, 18, made his debut, Marli Salmon, 17, started in central defence and goalkeeper Illan Meslier made his first start for Arsenal. Kai Havertz, Martin Zubimendi and Gyokeres were among the senior players in the side, while Martin Odegaard and Bruno Guimaraes were introduced from the bench.

Arteta congratulated Fleetwood afterwards and defended his players' attitude, application and determination, according to the BBC's reporting. The elimination leaves Arsenal still without a League Cup title since 1993. It also adds another lower-division exit to their record in the competition, following defeats by Bradford City in 2012 and Sheffield Wednesday in 2015.

For Fleetwood, attention now turns back to their league fixture against Bristol Rovers on Saturday. Lawlor encouraged his players to enjoy the achievement while reminding them of that commitment. Left-back Jake Batty, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, hoped the enthusiasm surrounding the cup win would translate into stronger support for league games.
