Fleetwood knock Arsenal out of Carabao Cup with 5-3 shootout win
Fleetwood Town knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, winning a penalty shootout 5-3 after a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium. The League Two club advanced to the quarter-finals at the expense of the Premier League champions, with goalkeeper Jay Lynch and defender Conor Haughey delivering the decisive moments.
Watch the highlights:
According to RTE's match report, Fleetwood entered the tie in 18th place in League Two but led through Aaron Loupalo-Bi after 21 minutes. The striker, on loan from Fulham, gave the hosts an advantage they carried into half-time against a much-changed Arsenal team that struggled to establish rhythm before the interval.
Martin Odegaard's introduction at half-time helped Arsenal improve, and Viktor Gyokeres equalised in the 50th minute. RTE reported that it was the forward's first goal of the season. Fleetwood nevertheless prevented Arsenal from adding a second, leaving the visitors unable to turn their stronger second-half performance into victory in normal time.
The Independent's live coverage described several opportunities Arsenal failed to convert as they pursued a winner. Odegaard lifted a pass over the defence for Kai Havertz, whose volley went into the side-netting. Later, Havertz could not find a teammate with a pull-back after another Odegaard pass, allowing Fleetwood to clear the danger.
Arsenal then lost Max Dowman to a red card late in the match after he kicked out following a challenge, according to The Independent. The visitors continued to threaten despite the dismissal. Lynch stopped Ben White's effort near the end of normal time and turned an Odegaard strike over the bar as Fleetwood held on.
The shootout brought the breakthrough Arsenal had been unable to secure on the pitch, but for Fleetwood instead. The Independent recorded successful Arsenal penalties from Odegaard, Havertz and Gyokeres before Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes's attempt. Ronan Coughlan, Harrison Neal, Davies and Andy Cannon had all scored for the hosts. Fleetwood converted every kick, with Haughey scoring their fifth to complete the victory and send the home supporters into celebration.
