Cloud9 Defeats Team Liquid 3-1 to Win Counter-Strike Major Championship in Copenhagen
The North American organization claims their second CS2 Major title with a dominant performance against their regional rivals at Royal Arena.

Cloud9 captured their second Counter-Strike Major championship on Sunday evening, defeating Team Liquid 3-1 in an all-North American grand final at the PGL Major Copenhagen 2026 held at Royal Arena. The victory marked a triumphant return to the top of competitive Counter-Strike for Cloud9, who last won a Major at the ELEAGUE Major Boston 2018, and validated their aggressive roster moves during the off-season.

The series showcased the highest level of tactical Counter-Strike, with both teams trading rounds in spectacular fashion across four grueling maps. Cloud9 took control early with a dominant 16-8 victory on Inferno, leveraging their superior teamwork and individual skill to overwhelm Liquid's defensive setups. Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev led the charge for Cloud9 with 28 kills and numerous clutch plays that swung crucial rounds in their favor.

"This feels incredible," said Cloud9 captain Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut during the post-match interview. "We've worked so hard for this moment, and to beat a team like Liquid in the final makes it even more special. The crowd was amazing, and our teamwork was perfect when we needed it most. This is what we came here to do."

Team Liquid responded with authority on their map pick Mirage, taking a convincing 16-6 victory behind explosive performances from Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken and Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski. The veteran duo's experience and clutch factor kept Liquid competitive throughout a series that many experts had predicted would favor Cloud9's star-studded lineup.

The turning point came on Dust2, where Cloud9's aggressive style and superior aim dueling proved decisive in a thrilling 19-17 overtime victory. S1mple's AWP play was particularly dominant, as the Ukrainian superstar recorded 34 kills while consistently finding opening picks that allowed his teammates to execute perfect site takes.

"Cloud9 played at an incredible level today," Team Liquid coach Wilton "zews" Prado acknowledged after the defeat. "Their individual skill combined with excellent teamwork made them very difficult to stop. We fought hard and had our moments, but they were just better in the crucial rounds. Credit to them for an outstanding tournament."

Cloud9 sealed the championship with a methodical 16-11 victory on Ancient, showcasing the tactical depth and preparation that had carried them through the entire tournament. The North American organization had not dropped a single map during the group stage and eliminated favorites FaZe Clan and G2 Esports on their path to the final.

The $500,000 winner's prize and Major championship provides Cloud9 with enormous momentum heading into the upcoming ESL Pro League season, where they'll look to establish themselves as the world's premier Counter-Strike team. Their combination of veteran leadership and young talent suggests they could dominate the scene for years to come.

S1mple was named tournament MVP after averaging 1.31 rating across all maps, including several match-winning performances that demonstrated why many consider him the greatest Counter-Strike player of all time. His decision to join Cloud9 during the off-season has clearly paid dividends for both player and organization.

The Major championship also represents a significant milestone for North American Counter-Strike, which has struggled to compete with European teams in recent years. Cloud9's victory proves that NA teams can still compete at the highest level when they invest properly in talent and infrastructure.
