Team Liquid Upsets Fnatic to Win League of Legends Spring Split Championship
Team Liquid pulled off one of the biggest upsets in League of Legends esports history, defeating European champions Fnatic 3-2 in a thrilling five-game series to win the Mid-Season Invitational Spring Split Championship in Seoul, South Korea on Sunday night.
The North American squad, who entered the tournament as heavy underdogs, completed an incredible lower bracket run that saw them defeat four consecutive opponents without dropping a series. Their victory over Fnatic marks Team Liquid's first international championship since 2019 and breaks Europe's dominance at MSI events.
"I can't believe we actually did it," said Team Liquid's AD Carry, Danny "CoreJJ" Kim, fighting back tears during the post-match interview. "We've been working so hard for this moment. Everyone counted us out, but we believed in ourselves and our preparation. This is for all the NA fans who never stopped supporting us."
The series was an absolute masterclass in competitive League of Legends, with momentum swinging back and forth throughout all five games. Fnatic took an early 2-1 lead behind stellar performances from their star mid-laner Rasmus "Caps" Winther, but Team Liquid responded with two consecutive victories to claim the championship.
The deciding Game 5 lasted 47 minutes and featured multiple lead changes, team fights, and clutch plays from both sides. Team Liquid's jungler Mingyi "Spica" Lu sealed the victory with a game-winning Baron steal at the 45-minute mark, setting up the final push that would crown them champions.
"They played out of their minds today," Fnatic coach Dylan Falco acknowledged. "Credit to Liquid - they executed their game plan perfectly and made fewer mistakes than us when it mattered most. They deserved this victory."
Team Liquid's championship run featured dominant victories over defending world champions T1, Chinese powerhouse JD Gaming, and last year's MSI winners Gen.G. Their performance in Seoul has completely reshaped the international power rankings heading into the Summer Split.
The victory earned Team Liquid $150,000 in prize money and, more importantly, a direct seed to the League of Legends World Championship later this year. Their triumph represents the first time a North American team has won an international Riot Games tournament since Team Liquid's MSI victory in 2019, ending years of regional disappointment on the global stage.
