Hamilton Takes Pole Position for Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with Record-Breaking Lap
Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a stunning lap record at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, setting the stage for Sunday's season opener.

Lewis Hamilton delivered a masterful qualifying performance at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit today, claiming pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a blistering lap time that shattered the previous circuit record. The seven-time world champion's time of 1:27.472 was over two-tenths faster than his previous best effort at the challenging street circuit, showcasing the improved pace of his Mercedes W17 and setting up what promises to be a thrilling season opener for the 2026 Formula 1 campaign.

Hamilton's pole-winning lap came in the dying moments of Q3, when the 41-year-old veteran found an extra gear that separated him from the rest of the field. His sector times were exceptional throughout the qualifying session, with his final sector being particularly impressive as he navigated the high-speed corners with precision and confidence. The lap represented a perfect combination of man and machine working in harmony, with Hamilton's experience allowing him to extract maximum performance from the updated Mercedes power unit.

Max Verstappen, the defending three-time world champion, qualified second in his Red Bull RB22, finishing 0.187 seconds behind Hamilton despite appearing comfortable throughout the practice sessions. The Dutchman's qualifying performance was solid rather than spectacular, suggesting that Red Bull may need to find additional pace to match Mercedes' early-season form. Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three in his Ferrari, continuing the Italian team's strong start to the new campaign with consistent speed across all three practice sessions.

The qualifying session was not without drama, as several drivers struggled with the demanding nature of the Jeddah circuit in the evening conditions. McLaren's Lando Norris suffered a disappointing Q1 elimination after a mechanical issue limited his running, while Alpine's Pierre Gasly had a spectacular save at Turn 22 that could have ended his session prematurely. The high-speed nature of the circuit continued to provide spectacular racing action while demanding respect from even the most experienced drivers.

"That was one of the most satisfying pole positions of my career," Hamilton said after stepping out of his car. "The team has done an incredible job with this car over the winter, and to start the season like this gives us tremendous confidence. Jeddah is such a demanding circuit, and to put together a lap like that when it matters most feels amazing. Tomorrow's race will be a different challenge, but starting from the front gives us the best opportunity to fight for the win."

Hamilton's pole position marks his 105th career pole and his first since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, suggesting that both he and Mercedes have rediscovered their winning formula after a challenging 2025 season. The performance also sends a strong message to the rest of the grid that the veteran driver has no intention of slowing down as he approaches his 42nd birthday. With the longest straight on the calendar providing multiple overtaking opportunities, Sunday's race promises to be an exciting battle between the sport's most successful teams and drivers.
