Hamilton Sets Fastest Time on Final Day of Bahrain Pre-Season Testing as Ferrari Shows Promise
Lewis Hamilton ended Formula 1's pre-season testing program on a high note today, setting the fastest lap time on the final day at the Bahrain International Circuit as teams completed their preparations for next weekend's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion's time of 1:29.345 was over two-tenths faster than his nearest rival, suggesting Mercedes may have found significant performance gains over the winter break.
The final day of testing provided the most representative picture yet of the competitive order heading into 2026, with Hamilton's Mercedes showing impressive long-run pace alongside their single-lap speed. The British driver completed 89 laps without any significant technical issues, a stark contrast to the reliability problems that plagued Mercedes during much of the 2025 season. Team principal Toto Wolff expressed cautious optimism about their prospects while warning against reading too much into testing times.
Ferry impressive was the performance of Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc finishing second fastest and completing the most laps of any driver with 112 trouble-free miles. The Scuderia appeared to have solved the tire degradation issues that hampered their championship challenge last year, with both Leclerc and teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. showing strong pace across different fuel loads and tire compounds throughout their extensive running programs.
Reigning world champion Max Verstappen was notably absent from the top of the timesheet, finishing fourth fastest for Red Bull Racing. However, the Dutchman and his team appeared focused on race preparation rather than headline lap times, with Verstappen completing several long runs that suggested Red Bull remains the team to beat despite their lack of outright pace in today's session. Team principal Christian Horner downplayed concerns about their testing performance.
"Testing times don't win you races," Verstappen commented after the session. "We've been working on our race setup and understanding the car in different conditions. The important thing is that we're ready for next weekend, and I feel confident about where we are. Every team has been working hard over the winter, so it will be interesting to see where everyone really stands when it matters."
The final day of testing also saw encouraging signs from McLaren and Alpine, both teams showing improved reliability and competitive pace that suggests the midfield battle could be closer than ever in 2026. Aston Martin struggled with technical issues that limited their running, while Williams completed their program without major incidents but appeared to lack the pace of their immediate rivals. With just four days until practice begins for the Bahrain Grand Prix, the stage is set for what promises to be one of the most competitive Formula 1 seasons in recent memory.
