Verstappen Dominates Bahrain Grand Prix Practice as Red Bull Shows Championship Form
Max Verstappen served notice that Red Bull remains the team to beat in Formula 1, dominating both free practice sessions on the opening day of the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. The defending three-time world champion was fastest in FP1 and followed up with an even more impressive performance in the evening session, posting a lap time that was over four-tenths faster than his nearest competitor.
Verstappen's best lap of 1:29.457 in the second practice session showcased the continued evolution of the Red Bull RB22, which appeared to have addressed the minor handling issues that surfaced during pre-season testing. The Dutchman completed 56 laps across both sessions without any significant technical problems, allowing the team to gather crucial data on tire performance and setup configurations for Saturday's qualifying session.
Mercedes provided the closest competition to Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton finishing second fastest in FP2, 0.412 seconds behind Verstappen's benchmark time. The seven-time world champion appeared more comfortable in the W15 than he had during winter testing, suggesting that Mercedes may have found the performance gains needed to mount a serious challenge to Red Bull's supremacy. George Russell completed the top three, maintaining the silver arrows' encouraging start to the weekend.
Ferrari endured a more challenging opening day, with Charles Leclerc finishing fourth fastest but suffering a minor engine issue that limited his running in the final 30 minutes of FP2. The Monégasque driver was forced to return to the pits with what the team described as a "precautionary" shutdown, though early indications suggest the problem was not serious. Teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. finished sixth, sandwiched between McLaren's Lando Norris in fifth position.
"The car felt really good today, especially in the second session when we focused on our qualifying setup," Verstappen said after climbing out of the cockpit. "We've been working on some specific areas over the winter, and it seems like we're heading in the right direction. Obviously, it's only practice, but the balance feels strong, and the team has done an excellent job preparing for this weekend."
The session was not without incident, with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso bringing out a brief red flag after spinning at Turn 4, though the Spanish veteran was able to continue without damage. Williams drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant struggled for pace throughout both sessions, suggesting the Grove-based team may face another challenging campaign. With qualifying set for Saturday evening under the lights, Verstappen's dominant Friday performance has established Red Bull as the early favorites to secure pole position and continue their remarkable run of success at the Bahrain International Circuit.
