Gordie Howe

Gordon Howe, universally known as Mr. Hockey, was born on March 31, 1928, in Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada. Howe's extraordinary career spanned five decades and multiple leagues, establishing him as one of the most complete and enduring athletes in sports history.

Howe joined the Detroit Red Wings in 1946 at age 18, beginning what would become one of the most storied careers in professional sports. His unique combination of skill, toughness, and longevity made him a fan favorite and earned universal respect from teammates and opponents alike. Howe's playing style embodied the essence of hockey: he could score, pass, fight, and intimidate with equal effectiveness.

During his time with Detroit, Howe led the Red Wings to four Stanley Cup championships in the 1950s, establishing a dynasty that dominated the NHL. His rivalry with Maurice Richard captivated hockey fans and helped grow the sport's popularity across North America. Howe's ability to remain effective well into his 40s was unprecedented in professional hockey.

In 1971, Howe retired from the NHL holding virtually every major scoring record, including most goals, assists, and points. However, his story was far from over. In 1973, at age 45, he came out of retirement to play alongside his sons Mark and Marty with the Houston Aeros in the World Hockey Association, creating one of sports' most compelling family stories.

Howe's WHA career proved he could still compete at the highest level, winning two championships with Houston before finishing his professional career with the Hartford Whalers in the NHL at age 52. His final NHL game in 1980 capped a remarkable 32-year professional career.
