Joey Logano Wins Las Vegas Motor Speedway as NASCAR Cup Series Opens 2026 Season
The defending champion captures his first victory of the new season with a dominant performance in the season opener, leading 142 laps en route to Victory Lane.

Joey Logano kicked off the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season in perfect fashion on Monday afternoon, dominating the Las Vegas 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to claim his first victory of the year and send an early message to the competition. The defending series champion led 142 of 267 laps in his No. 22 Ford Mustang, controlling the race from the midpoint onward and crossing the finish line 2.847 seconds ahead of runner-up Kyle Larson.

Logano's victory was built on a combination of superior pit strategy from crew chief Paul Wolfe and flawless execution when it mattered most. The Connecticut native took the lead for good on Lap 180 following a cycle of green-flag pit stops and never relinquished control, despite multiple restart challenges from some of NASCAR's biggest stars.

"This feels incredible," Logano said while celebrating in Victory Lane. "To start the season with a win, especially after the championship last year, gives us so much confidence. Paul and the guys made all the right calls today, and the car was absolutely perfect when we needed it to be. Las Vegas has always been good to me, and to get our first win here feels special."

The victory was particularly impressive given the strength of the field and the unpredictable nature of superspeedway racing that Las Vegas has become known for in recent years. Logano had to survive multiple caution periods and aggressive challenges from former champions like Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., and Denny Hamlin to secure the checkered flag.

Larson, driving the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro, mounted a furious charge in the closing stages but couldn't quite catch Logano despite posting some of the fastest laps of the race. The 2021 champion's second-place finish was his best result at Las Vegas since 2019 and provides optimism for Hendrick Motorsports heading into the early portion of the season.

"Joey and that 22 team were really strong today," Larson acknowledged after climbing out of his car. "We had a good car there at the end and thought we might have something for him, but they just had us covered. It's a good way to start the season with a top-five finish, and we'll take the momentum into Phoenix."

The race featured 8 caution periods and 15 different leaders, showcasing the competitive balance that has defined NASCAR's Next Gen era. However, Logano's ability to stay out of trouble while positioning himself for the win demonstrated the championship-caliber racecraft that made him the 2025 series champion.

Chase Elliott finished third in his No. 9 Chevrolet, followed by Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney to round out the top five. The strong showing by multiple manufacturers suggests that the 2026 season could feature the closest competition in NASCAR history.

Logano's victory marks the perfect start to what Team Penske hopes will be another championship campaign. The 33-year-old driver has now won at least one race in each of the past eight seasons, establishing himself as one of NASCAR's most consistent performers during the sport's modern era.

Next week, the Cup Series heads to Phoenix Raceway for the second race of the season, where Logano will look to build on this momentum and establish himself as an early championship favorite.
