Max Verstappen Dominates Bahrain Grand Prix to Start 2026 F1 Season with Victory
Max Verstappen delivered a masterclass performance to win the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, leading teammate Sergio Perez to a Red Bull Racing 1-2 finish that sent an early warning to their rivals about the team's continued dominance. The three-time world champion controlled the race from pole position, crossing the finish line 18.5 seconds ahead of Perez.
The race's biggest story was Lewis Hamilton's debut for Ferrari, with the seven-time world champion claiming the final podium position in his iconic red overalls. Hamilton, who made the shocking switch from Mercedes during the off-season, showed impressive pace in the SF-26 but couldn't match the raw speed of the Red Bulls on the flowing Bahrain International Circuit.
"It's the perfect start to our title defense," said Verstappen after climbing out of his RB20. "The car felt incredible from the first lap, and the team executed a flawless strategy. Checo did a great job supporting the team effort, and this 1-2 finish gives us tremendous confidence moving forward."
Hamilton's Ferrari debut generated enormous interest, with television viewership reaching record levels globally. The British driver started fourth but used superior tire strategy and racecraft to claim third place, finishing ahead of his former Mercedes teammate George Russell and McLaren's Lando Norris.
"Obviously, I would have loved to win on my Ferrari debut, but this is a positive start," Hamilton reflected. "The car has great potential, and we showed we can fight with the best teams. Max and Red Bull are still the benchmark, but we're not far behind. This podium tastes pretty sweet in red."
The race featured several dramatic moments, including a spectacular crash on lap 23 when Alpine's Esteban Ocon lost control at Turn 4, bringing out the safety car. The incident shuffled the field and allowed Hamilton to jump ahead of Russell during the pit stop sequence that followed.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised his drivers' professional approach to the season opener. "Max showed why he's the champion with that dominant drive, and Sergio delivered exactly what we needed from him," Horner said. "Starting the season with maximum points is crucial, especially with the competition looking stronger this year."
The Formula 1 circus now heads to Saudi Arabia for next weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where teams will get another opportunity to gauge their true pace over a complete race distance.
