João Pedro rescues Chelsea in 2-2 draw after Belloumi double for Hull

João Pedro scored a second-half equaliser as Chelsea drew 2-2 with Hull after Mohamed Belloumi's two goals had put the visitors ahead. The Guardian's match report described a contest in which both sides had late opportunities to win, with Hull finishing the game third in the Premier League and Chelsea's winless home sequence against promoted teams reaching five matches.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso switched from three central defenders to a 4-2-3-1 formation, leaving out Maxence Lacroix, and his team took the lead in the seventh minute. A counterattack from a Hull corner ended with João Pedro finding Morgan Rogers, who went past Regan Slater and scored low at Konstantinos Tzolakis's near post. Pedro Neto subsequently forced another save as Chelsea threatened to increase their advantage.

Hull's recovery began when Ryan Giles won possession from Malo Gusto following a long clearance by Tzolakis. Giles crossed towards the far post, where Jorrel Hato failed to judge the bounce and Belloumi finished past Emi Martínez. More pressure followed: Levi Colwill cleared Lewie Coyle's attempt off the line before the resulting corner brought Hull's second goal. Semi Ajayi headed against the bar and Belloumi struck the loose ball, with a deflection helping his shot beat Martínez.

Alonso replaced Hato with Pep Chavarría at half-time, but Chelsea continued to face resistance. Tzolakis saved a Reece James free-kick, while Ajayi and Nobel Mendy dealt with crosses. Mendy later went off following a collision of heads with João Pedro and was replaced by Lucas Herrington. At the other end, Martínez blocked Oli McBurnie's follow-up after failing to hold a shot from Slater, preventing Hull from extending their lead.

Chelsea then levelled through a move created by Cole Palmer, who drove down the left and pulled the ball back for João Pedro to finish high into the net. Danny Welbeck subsequently replaced Gusto to join the attack. Palmer curled an effort over and then supplied Rogers for another chance, but Tzolakis kept the score level.

Hull also remained dangerous after making changes. Substitute Brooke Norton-Cuffy had a shot blocked following a forward run, and Mohamed-Ali Cho shot straight at Martínez from close range late on. Neither side found a winner. Although Rogers and João Pedro ended Hull's previously unblemished defensive record, Belloumi's first-half contribution ensured the visitors left with a point.
