Nmecha double keeps Dortmund perfect as Freiburg go top

Borussia Dortmund beat Paderborn 3-0 on Saturday to claim a third Bundesliga victory from three matches, while Freiburg went top with a 5-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Fábio Silva opened the scoring in Dortmund before substitute Felix Nmecha struck twice late on, according to the club's match report.

Silva scored in the fifth minute after collecting Serhou Guirassy's long pass, escaping the visiting defence and rounding goalkeeper Nahuel Noll. Guirassy subsequently had two first-half finishes ruled out for offside following VAR intervention. Dortmund therefore reached the interval with only a one-goal advantage despite those further opportunities to extend their lead.

Nmecha made the decisive contribution from the bench. He exchanged passes with fellow substitute Maximilian Beier before scoring in the 80th minute, then converted Marcel Sabitzer's cross with a bicycle kick in the 89th. Dortmund's report recorded a sell-out attendance of 81,365 and confirmed that Nico Schlotterbeck returned after nearly three months out injured.

Freiburg's victory also took them to three wins from three, their first perfect opening to a Bundesliga season, according to a dpa report published by Wochenblatt-Reporter. Yannik Engelhardt headed in Derry Scherhant's corner in the 23rd minute, and Igor Matanovic doubled the lead six minutes later from Matthias Ginter's low delivery, with the ball going in off the inside of the post.

Gladbach's task became harder when captain Tim Kleindienst received a second yellow card in the 52nd minute after catching Philipp Lienhart's foot. Coach Eugen Polanski had made three changes to his starting line-up, bringing in David Herold, Robin Hack and Kevin Stöger, but his side again failed to collect their first points of the league campaign.

Matanovic scored his second in the 77th minute from Jordy Makengo's assist. Engelhardt added another two minutes later before Maximilian Eggestein completed the scoring in the 86th. The 34,700 spectators saw Freiburg finish with five goals and a clean sheet, while Gladbach were left with three defeats from their opening three matches.
