NBA Trade Deadline Shakeup: Lakers Acquire Star Guard in Blockbuster Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers have made a major move ahead of the trade deadline, acquiring an All-Star guard in a three-team deal that could reshape the playoff picture.

The Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves through the NBA today by completing a blockbuster three-team trade that brings All-Star guard Marcus Thompson to Los Angeles just days before the February 20th trade deadline. The deal, which also involves the Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs, represents one of the most significant moves of the 2026 season.

Thompson, who has averaged 22.4 points and 7.8 assists per game this season for Portland, immediately becomes the Lakers second scoring option alongside LeBron James Jr. The 26-year-old guard has been one of the most coveted players on the trade market, with his combination of scoring ability and playmaking making him an ideal fit for championship-contending teams.

The Lakers parted with promising young forward Austin Reaves, veteran center Christian Wood, and two future first-round picks to make the deal happen. Portland receives the draft picks and takes on Wood contract, while San Antonio acquires Reaves as part of their youth movement. The complex three-team structure allowed all parties to address their specific needs.

Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka called the move essential for the teams championship aspirations. We believe Marcus gives us the dynamic playmaker weve been searching for, Pelinka said during a hastily arranged press conference. His ability to create for others while also being a legitimate scoring threat makes our offense much more dangerous.

The trade immediately impacts the Western Conference playoff race, where the Lakers currently sit in sixth place. Thompsons addition could push them up the standings and make them a more formidable opponent for top seeds like Denver and Phoenix. The move also puts pressure on other contenders to make their own deadline deals.

Thompson is expected to make his Lakers debut Wednesday night against the Miami Heat at Crypto.com Arena. The acquisition represents the Lakers most significant in-season move since acquiring Russell Westbrook in 2021, though early reactions suggest this deal has been met with far more enthusiasm from fans and analysts alike.
