Coco Gauff Storms into Indian Wells Semifinals with Dominant Win Over Aryna Sabalenka
The defending US Open champion defeated the world No. 2 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to reach her first Indian Wells semifinal.

Coco Gauff produced her best tennis of the season to defeat world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-2 in the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, advancing to her first Indian Wells semifinal in spectacular fashion.

The 22-year-old American, seeded sixth at the prestigious WTA 1000 event, dominated from the baseline and showcased the aggressive style that carried her to US Open glory last year. Gauff broke Sabalenka's serve four times while saving all three break points she faced, demonstrating remarkable composure against one of the tour's most powerful players.

"I felt really good out there today," Gauff said in her on-court interview. "Aryna is such a tough opponent, but I was able to stay focused and execute my game plan. The crowd here has been incredible, and I'm excited to be in my first semifinal at Indian Wells."

Gauff took control of the first set by breaking Sabalenka's serve in the ninth game, capitalizing on three consecutive unforced errors from the Belarusian. The young American then served out the set with confidence, firing an ace down the T to take a 6-4 advantage.

The second set was even more convincing for Gauff, who broke early and never looked back. Her backhand, often considered her strongest weapon, was working beautifully as she consistently found angles that troubled Sabalenka. A double break gave Gauff a commanding 5-1 lead, and she closed out the match with a forehand winner down the line.

Sabalenka, who was seeking her third title of 2026, struggled with her typically reliable serve throughout the match, committing six double faults and winning just 58% of points on her first serve. The result snaps the Australian Open champion's eight-match winning streak and hands her just her third loss of the season.

Gauff will face either Jessica Pegula or Qinwen Zheng in Thursday's semifinal as she looks to capture her first WTA 1000 title since her breakthrough season. The winner will advance to Saturday's final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
