Aryna Sabalenka Defeats Coco Gauff 6-4, 7-5 to Win Miami Open and Claim Third WTA Title of 2026
The Belarusian powerhouse overcomes the defending champion in a high-quality final to capture her first Miami Open crown.

Aryna Sabalenka captured her third WTA title of the 2026 season Thursday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium, defeating defending champion Coco Gauff 6-4, 7-5 in a thrilling Miami Open final that showcased the highest level of women's tennis. The world No. 2 from Belarus controlled the majority of the match with her trademark aggressive baseline game, overcoming a spirited challenge from the 21-year-old American to claim her first title in Miami.

Sabalenka took control early in the opening set, breaking Gauff's serve in the fifth game with a series of punishing forehands that consistently pushed the American behind the baseline. The 25-year-old maintained that advantage throughout the set, serving with authority and hitting 14 winners compared to just 8 unforced errors in a dominant opening frame.

Gauff elevated her level significantly in the second set, showing the type of court coverage and defensive skills that have made her one of the most promising young players on tour. The reigning US Open champion broke Sabalenka's serve twice and appeared poised to force a deciding set when she held a 5-4 lead and was serving for the set.

However, Sabalenka demonstrated the mental toughness that has defined her breakthrough into the tennis elite, breaking back immediately with a stunning return winner down the line. The Belarusian then held her own serve before breaking Gauff again in the 12th game, closing out the match with a forehand winner that sent the Miami crowd into applause for both players.

"This title means so much to me," Sabalenka said during the trophy ceremony. "Coco is an incredible champion and she pushed me to my absolute best today. Miami has always been a special place for me to play, and to finally win here after some tough losses in previous years feels amazing. I feel like I'm playing the best tennis of my career right now."

The victory marks Sabalenka's 12th career WTA title and continues her excellent start to the 2026 season. The two-time Australian Open champion has now won 22 of her 24 matches this year and appears to be the player to beat heading into the clay court season and ultimately the French Open in May.

For Gauff, the runner-up finish was disappointing but demonstrated her continued growth as a player. The American had been seeking to become the first player to successfully defend the Miami Open title since Victoria Azarenka in 2016, but couldn't quite match Sabalenka's power and consistency in the crucial moments. Despite the loss, Gauff's run to the final reinforced her status as one of the sport's brightest young stars and a legitimate contender for major titles throughout the season. The defeat also highlighted areas for improvement as she continues developing her game under coach Brad Gilbert.
