Iga Swiatek Defeats Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-3 to Win BNP Paribas Open and Extend Indian Wells Dominance
Iga Swiatek continued her reign as the queen of Indian Wells Thursday evening at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-3 to capture her third consecutive title at the prestigious California tournament. The world No. 1 from Poland was in complete control throughout most of the final, using her trademark aggressive groundstrokes and superior court coverage to overwhelm the 22-year-old American in front of a capacity crowd at Stadium 1.
Swiatek started slowly in the opening set, falling behind 4-2 as Gauff used her improved forehand and aggressive return game to take early control. However, the five-time Grand Slam champion showed why she's been so dominant on hard courts over the past three years, winning five of the next six games to claim the first set. Her ability to raise her level in crucial moments was evident as she saved three break points while serving for the set at 6-5.
The second set was a showcase of Swiatek's tactical brilliance and physical conditioning, as she consistently moved Gauff around the court while maintaining remarkable consistency from the baseline. The 24-year-old Polish star won 78% of her first-serve points and converted four of her six break-point opportunities, demonstrating the type of clutch performance that has made her the sport's most dominant player.
Gauff, who entered the final having won 11 straight matches including her title at the Miami Open two weeks ago, showed flashes of the aggressive tennis that has made her one of the tour's rising stars. However, she struggled with 31 unforced errors compared to Swiatek's 19, unable to maintain the consistency needed to challenge the world's best player over two sets.
"This tournament means so much to me, and to win it three times in a row feels incredible," Swiatek said during the trophy ceremony, holding the crystal winner's trophy above her head. "Coco is such a talented player and she pushed me to play my best tennis. The conditions here at Indian Wells suit my game perfectly, and I hope I can keep coming back and adding to this collection."
The victory marks Swiatek's 19th WTA singles title and her fourth Masters 1000 crown, further cementing her status as the dominant force in women's tennis. Her record at Indian Wells now stands at an impressive 18-2 over the past three years, including her current 15-match winning streak at the tournament.
For Gauff, the runner-up finish was disappointing but continued her excellent 2026 season that has seen her win two titles and establish herself as Swiatek's primary challenger. The American will have another chance to face the Polish star when the tour moves to Miami next week, where Gauff will be defending her title from last year. Swiatek's continued dominance at the sport's biggest events reinforces her position as the clear favorite heading into the French Open in just over two months, where she'll be seeking her fourth Roland Garros title.
