Bompastor lauds Chelsea Women move as 'ambitious' project takes shape at Stamford Bridge
Former Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor has spoken for the first time about her decision to take charge of Chelsea Women, describing the opportunity as a chance to build something truly ambitious at one of women's football's powerhouses.
Watch the highlights:
Bompastor, who led Lyon to multiple Division 1 Feminine titles and Champions League success, was confirmed as Emma Hayes' successor last month after the legendary English manager departed for the United States women's national team. The French coach signed a three-year contract and will take charge ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Speaking at her first press conference since the appointment, Bompastor expressed her excitement about the challenge. "Chelsea Women represent everything I want to be part of - a club with ambitions to be the very best, a fantastic stadium, incredible support, and a squad capable of winning major trophies," she said. "I want to build something really ambitious here."
The 43-year-old also revealed she had already begun working behind the scenes, meeting with players and staff. "I've been in contact with the squad and I'm impressed by the quality we have. The foundation is there - now it's about refining and pushing forward."
Chelsea won the Women's Super League title in Hayes' final season and remain one of England's dominant forces in women's football. Bompastor inherits a squad featuring several international stars and will look to maintain their domestic supremacy while challenging for European honours.
The former France international acknowledged the压力 of following Hayes but remained confident. "Emma left enormous shoes to fill, but I'm ready for this challenge. Chelsea's vision matches my own ambitions perfectly."
