Bompastor lauds Stamford Bridge move - 'We want to be really ambitious'
Chelsea Women's new head coach Sonia Bompastor discusses her vision for the club following her appointment, emphasizing an ambitious project that aims to establish Chelsea as the dominant force in women's football.

Sonia Bompastor has been officially unveiled as Chelsea Women's new head coach, signing a three-year contract that will see her guide the club through a transformative period both on and off the pitch. The Frenchmanager, who previously enjoyed a successful playing career at Lyon before transitioning into coaching, replaces Emma Hayes who departed for the United States last summer. Bompastor arrives with an impressive coaching pedigree, having led Lyon to two Division 1 Féridine titles and a Coupe de France Férinine victory during her three-year tenure.

Watch the highlights:

At her unveiling press conference at Cobham training ground, Bompastor was keen to stress the scale of her ambitions for the club. "Chelsea Women's project is one of the most exciting in world football right now," she began. "We want to be really ambitious. That means competing for every trophy domestically while establishing ourselves as genuine contenders for the UEFA Women's Champions League. The infrastructure here, from the training facilities to the support staff, provides everything needed to achieve those goals."

The 44-year-old inherit a squad that finished third in the Women's Super League last season, seven points behind champions Arsenal. While that represents Chelsea's lowest league finish in recent years, Bompastor sees significant potential in the current playing squad. "There are incredible players here with vast experience of winning major honors. My job is to create the environment and tactical framework that allows them to express themselves and return to winning ways. The ambition doesn't change just because we finished third - if anything, that makes us more determined."

Chelsea co-sporting directors have been effusive in their praise for the appointment, highlighting Bompastor's tactical flexibility and ability to develop young talent as key factors in their decision. The club's owner, who has maintained substantial investment in the women's team despite financial constraints elsewhere, has publicly backed the new coach with promises of transfer support for the upcoming windows. Bompastor is expected to have a significant say in recruitment strategy, with several targets already identified for the summer transfer period.

Her first competitive match in charge will be the season-opening Women's Super League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in September. However, Bompastor will first have a full pre-season to implement her preferred 4-3-3 system and build relationships with the squad. "I'm excited to get started and begin working with the players," she concluded. "Chelsea Women have a proud history and a passionate fanbase. Together, we will write the next chapter and ensure this club continues to lead the way in women's football."
