Tottenham end winless league start as Maddison scores in Coventry victory
Tottenham beat Coventry City 3-1 for their first Premier League win of the season. James Maddison scored on his return to the starting line-up, while Dejan Kulusevski also made his comeback.

Tottenham claimed their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-1 home win over Coventry City on Monday, October 19. James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scored as Roberto De Zerbi's side won at the seventh attempt. The Standard reported that Spurs had begun the evening at the bottom of the table.

Watch the highlights:

Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute on his first start in 536 days. Facing the club where he began his career, the midfielder sent a first-time curling shot past Carl Rushworth. According to The Standard, it was the first time Tottenham had taken the lead in a Premier League match this season, ending another part of their difficult start.

Coventry created chances before the break. BBC Sport's account highlighted Micky van de Ven's tackle to deny Brandon Thomas-Asante, while Jan Paul van Hecke also made an important clearance. Dominic Solanke sent an effort over for Tottenham, who went into the interval ahead but had not removed the threat from the visitors. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto also had a first-half opportunity for Coventry.

Jack Rudoni brought Coventry level early in the second half after Van Hecke lost possession. Tottenham recovered the lead through Marmoush, whose shot beat Rushworth for his first Spurs goal. BBC Sport reported that Milan van Ewijk was caught by an elbow while challenging Marmoush. The Guardian reported that referee Andrew Madley allowed play to continue and the video assistant referee did not intervene.

Tottenham also had to make changes in defence. BBC Sport reported injuries to Tosin Adarabioyo and Andrew Robertson, with Mateus Fernandes and Davies introduced, while Conor Gallagher replaced Maddison. The substitutions came with Spurs still holding a narrow lead. Coventry turned to Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi from the bench, and later introduced Ephron Mason-Clark and Gustavo Hamer.

Dejan Kulusevski's late introduction added another significant return for the hosts. The Standard reported that he was making his first appearance in 526 days after a patella injury. Davies then scored in stoppage time, his low effort beating Rushworth to give Tottenham a two-goal margin and complete their first league win of the campaign.
