Razaullah's debut 81 leaves England chasing 130 at Edgbaston

Pakistan debutant Razaullah scored 81 from 63 balls to help set England a target of 130 in the third Test at Edgbaston, taking the match into a fourth day. BBC Sport reported that Pakistan finished their second innings on 449 after a late recovery prevented England from completing victory on Friday.

The tourists were 318-8, still two runs short of making England bat again, before Razaullah and Muhammad Abbas added 121 for the ninth wicket. Abbas contributed 42, including two sixes, before Josh Tongue had him caught at point. Their partnership changed the immediate task for England from finishing an innings victory to preparing for a run chase.

Earlier, Pakistan's leading batters had provided the resistance missing from their first-innings total of 133. Azan Awais made 59 and shared a third-wicket partnership of 125 with Shan Masood. Masood scored 95 before Dan Lawrence caught him one-handed at gully off Gus Atkinson, while captain Babar Azam contributed 76 before falling to a Tongue bouncer.

Razaullah's innings was especially striking given his limited experience. In a separate report, BBC Sport said the 21-year-old had played only eight first-class matches and had been brought into the side primarily for his fast bowling. Batting at number nine, he used three bats during his innings after breaking two, and continued attacking even when England captain Joe Root placed eight fielders on the boundary.

His nine sixes matched the record for a Test innings in England, equalling Ben Stokes' tally during his 155 against Australia in 2023. The debutant had previously signed to play the 2026 season for Cleethorpes in the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League, according to the BBC, before a call-up to a Pakistan training camp in May changed those plans.

The closing moments brought one more reprieve before Razaullah's departure. He successfully reviewed an lbw decision against Lawrence, then was stumped from the next delivery. That left England, who made 453 in their first innings, to begin their pursuit on Saturday. Pakistan's recovery secured another day's play, but the outcome of the Test remained undecided.
