Jon Jones Successfully Defends Heavyweight Title with Dominant UFC 298 Performance
Jon Jones cemented his legacy as one of mixed martial arts' greatest champions with a dominant third-round submission victory over interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall in the main event of UFC 298 at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. The victory marks Jones' first successful defense of the undisputed heavyweight title he captured last year.
Jones, 38, controlled the fight from the opening bell with his exceptional wrestling and ground game. After stuffing Aspinall's early takedown attempts, Jones secured his own takedown midway through the first round and began to implement his suffocating ground-and-pound attack that has become his trademark.
"I knew Tom was going to come out aggressive and try to finish me early," Jones said during his post-fight interview. "My game plan was to weather that storm, get him to the ground, and break his will. That's exactly what happened. I feel like I'm at the peak of my powers right now."
Aspinall, the 30-year-old Englishman who had finished 13 of his 15 UFC victories, showed flashes of his striking ability in the opening minutes but was unable to keep the fight standing. Jones' relentless pressure and superior grappling gradually wore down the challenger, who began to slow noticeably in the second round.
The end came at 2:47 of the third round when Jones secured a rear-naked choke after transitioning from side control. Aspinall fought valiantly to escape but was forced to tap out, handing him his first loss since 2019 and ending his seven-fight winning streak.
"Jon is the greatest fighter of all time for a reason," Aspinall said graciously in defeat. "He showed me levels tonight that I need to reach. I'll go back to the drawing board and come back stronger. This loss will only motivate me."
With the victory, Jones improves to 28-1 in his MMA career and successfully unifies the heavyweight titles. UFC President Dana White hinted at a potential superfight with light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira next, though Jones remained noncommittal about his immediate future during the post-fight press conference.
