Alex Pereira Knocks Out Jamahal Hill to Defend Light Heavyweight Title at UFC 299
Alex Pereira cemented his status as one of the UFC's most dangerous strikers with a spectacular third-round knockout victory over Jamahal Hill at UFC 299 on Saturday night at Kaseya Center in Miami. The Brazilian champion defended his light heavyweight title with a perfectly timed left hook that dropped Hill and sent the sellout crowd into a frenzy.
The fight was competitive through the first two rounds, with both men landing significant strikes and showcasing the elite-level striking that made this one of the most anticipated matchups of the year. Hill used his reach advantage and boxing skills to land clean shots early, while Pereira gradually found his range and timing as the fight progressed.
"I knew I had to be patient tonight," Pereira said through his interpreter after the victory. "Jamahal is a very good striker with long arms, but I've been in these situations before. I waited for my moment, and when I saw the opening, I took it. That's what champions do."
The knockout came at 2:47 of the third round when Hill attempted to close distance with a jab-cross combination. Pereira slipped to his left and countered with a devastating left hook that caught Hill flush on the chin, dropping the challenger immediately. Referee Herb Dean quickly stepped in to wave off the contest as medical personnel attended to Hill.
Pereira's victory extends his remarkable UFC run, having now won titles in two different weight classes since joining the organization in 2021. The former kickboxing champion's transition to MMA has been seamless, with his elite striking ability translating perfectly to the octagon environment.
"Alex is a special talent," said UFC President Dana White during the post-fight press conference. "His knockout power is incredible, and he always delivers exciting fights for the fans. He's proven he's one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world right now."
Hill, who suffered his first professional loss, was gracious in defeat and praised Pereira's performance. "Alex caught me with a perfect shot," Hill said from the hospital where he was taken for precautionary evaluation. "I thought I was doing well in there, but that's the game. He's the champion for a reason, and I'll be back stronger."
With the victory, Pereira has several intriguing options for his next title defense. Former champion Jon Jones has expressed interest in returning to light heavyweight, while rising contenders Magomed Ankalaev and Aleksandar Rakic are also positioning themselves for title shots.
The knockout was Pereira's fourth in the UFC and his 33rd career knockout victory, further solidifying his reputation as one of combat sports' most feared strikers. His ability to end fights with a single shot makes him must-see television whenever he enters the octagon.
