Nathan MacKinnon Sets Franchise Record in Avalanche 5-2 Win Over Rangers
Nathan MacKinnon made history on Sunday night, becoming the fastest player in Colorado Avalanche franchise history to reach 90 points in a season during a commanding 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
The 28-year-old center scored twice and added an assist to reach the milestone in just 59 games, surpassing the previous record of 62 games set by Joe Sakic during the 1995-96 season. MacKinnon's explosive performance showcased why he's considered one of the most dynamic players in the NHL today.
"It's an incredible honor to break Joe's record," MacKinnon said after the game. "He's a legend in Colorado, and to have my name mentioned with his means everything to me. But we're focused on team success and making a deep playoff run."
Cale Makar contributed two assists and continued his Norris Trophy-caliber season, while Mikko Rantanen added a goal and assist. The Avalanche dominated from the opening faceoff, outshooting New York 38-24 and controlling play in all three zones throughout the contest.
For the Rangers, Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider found the back of the net, but their efforts weren't enough to overcome Colorado's relentless offensive attack. Igor Shesterkin made 33 saves to keep the score respectable, but faced constant pressure from an Avalanche team firing on all cylinders.
The victory moves Colorado to 37-17-4 on the season, keeping them firmly entrenched in the Western Conference playoff race. With MacKinnon playing at a Hart Trophy level and the supporting cast healthy, the Avalanche look poised for another deep postseason run as they chase their second Stanley Cup in three years.
