Nathan MacKinnon Scores Overtime Winner as Avalanche Edge Kings 3-2
Nathan MacKinnon capped off a spectacular individual performance with a power-play goal 2:17 into overtime, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at Ball Arena on Sunday night. The Hart Trophy candidate's 38th goal of the season came on a perfectly executed one-timer that found the top corner past Kings goaltender Cam Talbot.
The victory keeps Colorado firmly in the hunt for the Central Division title, moving them within three points of the division-leading Dallas Stars with 20 games remaining in the regular season. MacKinnon's heroics were exactly what the Avalanche needed after squandering a 2-0 lead in the third period.
"Nate was incredible tonight, especially in that overtime," said Avalanche coach Jared Bednar after the victory. "His compete level and skill in the big moments is what separates elite players from good players. That power-play goal was a thing of beauty, and it came at the perfect time for our team."
Colorado opened the scoring in the first period when Mikko Rantanen deflected a Cale Makar point shot past Talbot, giving the home crowd early reason to celebrate. The Avalanche doubled their advantage midway through the second period on a brilliant individual effort from Artturi Lehkonen, who beat two defenders before sliding the puck under Talbot's pads.
The Kings showed their resilience in the third period, scoring twice in a span of 4:23 to force overtime. Anze Kopitar cut the deficit in half with a power-play goal at 8:47, and Adrian Kempe tied the game with a spectacular wrist shot from the left circle with 6:50 remaining in regulation.
"We showed great character coming back from two goals down," said Kings coach Todd McLellan. "Unfortunately, we took that penalty in overtime and gave their power play a chance to win it. MacKinnon made us pay, but I'm proud of how we fought back."
MacKinnon finished the game with two points, extending his point streak to 12 games and solidifying his position as a front-runner for the Hart Trophy. The 28-year-old center has been Colorado's driving force all season, leading the team in goals, assists, and points while playing in all situations.
Colorado goaltender Alexandar Georgiev made 28 saves in the victory, including several key stops in the third period that kept the Avalanche in the game during Los Angeles's comeback attempt. The win improved Colorado's record to 37-18-5, keeping pace with the league's elite teams.
The Avalanche will look to build on this momentum when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night, while the Kings return home to face the Seattle Kraken as they continue their own playoff push in the competitive Western Conference.
