Bruins Defeat Rangers 4-1 to Tighten Eastern Conference Playoff Race
David Pastrnak scored two goals and added an assist as the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, tightening the Eastern Conference playoff race with just weeks remaining in the regular season.
The victory moves Boston within one point of the Rangers for the final automatic playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division, setting up a thrilling finish to the regular season. Pastrnak opened the scoring at 8:47 of the first period, deflecting a Charlie McAvoy point shot past Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.
"Every game from here on out is basically a playoff game," said Pastrnak, who now leads the team with 42 goals this season. "We know what's at stake, and we're playing with that desperation. Tonight was a huge character win for our group."
Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman was stellar between the pipes, stopping 31 of 32 shots to earn his 28th victory of the season. The 27-year-old netminder has been crucial to Boston's late-season surge, posting a 2.18 goals-against average over his last 15 starts.
The Rangers struck back early in the second period when Artemi Panarin scored on the power play, but Boston responded with three unanswered goals. Brad Marchand and Pavel Zacha added goals in the final frame to seal the victory and send the capacity crowd home disappointed.
"We had our chances, but they capitalized on theirs," Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said. "Credit to Boston - they're playing desperate hockey right now, and it shows. We need to match that intensity moving forward."
With 18 games remaining in the regular season, both teams now sit in a virtual tie for playoff positioning. The Rangers hold the tiebreaker advantage, but Boston's recent hot streak has them believing they can overtake their division rivals and secure home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
