Tribe and Carlson centuries lift Glamorgan to 318-3 against Essex

Centuries from Asa Tribe and Kiran Carlson carried Glamorgan to 318-3 against Essex on the opening day of their final County Championship match of the season at Sophia Gardens. Tribe finished unbeaten on 135, while captain Carlson made 107, as the home side recovered from a testing start to take control in Cardiff on Thursday.

BBC Sport reported that Essex initially kept Glamorgan under pressure, with Sam Cook and Jack Auld each beginning with a maiden. Tribe survived a dropped catch off Auld, and the hosts did not hit their first boundary until the 13th over. Zaman Akhter eventually broke an opening partnership of 76 in the 24th over, when Zain Ul Hassan edged to wicketkeeper George Bell.

Carlson then joined Tribe in a partnership worth more than 150 that changed the course of the day. Tribe reached his fifth half-century of the Championship season and passed 800 runs for the campaign. Carlson needed 93 balls for his own fifty before the pair increased the scoring rate, taking Glamorgan to 230-1 by tea and leaving Essex searching for a second breakthrough.

The captain reached his hundred from 142 deliveries in the first over after tea, taking two runs off Cook. Tribe followed with a boundary that brought up his century from 206 balls. Matt Critchley supplied Essex's response, removing Carlson for 107 and then dismissing Ben Kellaway for two five overs later. Those wickets gave the visitors their first bowling bonus point; Critchley finished with figures of 2-56.

Colin Ingram, playing his final Championship match for Glamorgan, arrived at the crease through a guard of honour. He ended the day on 24 not out, having struck three boundaries, alongside Tribe. Ingram's Glamorgan career has produced more than 11,000 runs across formats since 2015. The hosts finished with two bonus points, while Essex had one and were still waiting to begin their first innings.

The match also carries relegation implications for Essex, whose Division One status could depend on Leicestershire's appeal against a points deduction. Glamorgan, meanwhile, are seeking a second successive victory. Carlson said the intention was to bat for another couple of sessions on day two before reassessing. Essex director of cricket Chris Silverwood acknowledged that missed early chances had proved costly, particularly against Tribe.
