Milnes takes four wickets as Kent make strong start in promotion chase

Kent strengthened their position in the County Championship promotion race by dismissing Gloucestershire for 229 and reaching 71-1 on the opening day at Canterbury. Matt Milnes led the attack with 4-55, while Ben Compton and Sam Northeast guided the reply after an early wicket, according to the ECB Reporters’ Network report published by BBC Sport. The hosts entered the match needing 20 points to guarantee promotion from Division Two and chose to bowl on a notably green surface. Milnes made an immediate breakthrough in the second over when Joe Phillips was caught by Northeast. Gloucestershire recovered through a 62-run partnership between Ollie Price and Tom Boorman before Ekansh Singh had Boorman caught behind for 29 shortly before lunch. The visitors reached the interval at 74-2.

Kent continued to take wickets after the break. Matt Quinn removed Miles Hammond for 14, with Tawanda Muyeye taking the catch, and Keith Dudgeon trapped Price lbw for 52. Milnes then dismissed Kamran Dhariwal for two. Khaled Ahmed accounted for Daaryoush Ahmed, Sai Kishore and Che Simmons, leaving James Bracey to carry much of the responsibility for extending Gloucestershire’s innings.

Bracey made 86 and shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 58 with Matt Taylor, helping the visitors reach 208-8 at tea. His innings also brought a physical setback: after being struck on the leg by a throw at the stumps from substitute Bertie Foreman, he later needed Boorman to act as a runner. Milnes ended Gloucestershire’s resistance with two wickets in four balls, having Bracey caught by Northeast at gully before taking a return catch to dismiss JT Langridge for a duck.

With Bracey unable to keep wicket, Hammond took over behind the stumps for Kent’s reply. Gloucestershire nevertheless struck early when Langridge trapped Zak Crawley lbw for one in the third over. Compton and Northeast prevented any further losses, finishing unbeaten on 33 and 27 respectively to give Kent a stable platform heading into the second day.

Fading light curtailed the closing stages. With four overs remaining, the umpires told Gloucestershire they would have to use spin, and play ended after two more overs. Kent had collected three points to Gloucestershire’s none by stumps, but their promotion target remained unfulfilled with the match still in its opening innings for the home side.
