Coco Gauff Reaches Miami Open Final After Stunning Comeback Victory Over World Number Two Aryna Sabalenka
The American teen sensation saved two match points to defeat the Belarusian powerhouse 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 in a thrilling three-hour semifinal battle.

Coco Gauff produced one of the most remarkable comeback victories of her young career on Friday afternoon at the Miami Open, saving two match points to defeat world number two Aryna Sabalenka 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) in an absolutely enthralling semifinal that showcased the 21-year-old Americans incredible fighting spirit and shot-making ability under extreme pressure.

The match appeared to be slipping away from Gauff when Sabalenka served for victory at 5-4 in the deciding set, holding two match points on her powerful serve. However, the Florida native showed the mental toughness that has made her one of the most promising young players in the sport, saving both match points with aggressive returns before breaking serve to level the set at 5-5 and force a tiebreaker.

I honestly thought the match was over when she had those match points, Gauff said during her on-court interview. But something inside me just told me to keep fighting and see what happens. Aryna is such an incredible player and she was hitting the ball so hard, but I managed to stay calm and trust my shots when it mattered most.

The tiebreaker was a masterclass in clutch tennis from both players, with Sabalenka using her devastating forehand to build early leads while Gauff relied on her superior court coverage and defensive skills to stay within striking distance. The decisive moment came at 5-5 in the tiebreaker when Gauff hit a stunning cross-court passing shot winner that left the Belarusian stranded at the net.

Sabalenka, who had been seeking her fourth final appearance of 2026, was gracious in defeat despite the crushing disappointment of letting victory slip away from such a commanding position. Coco played incredible tennis today, especially when she was facing match points, Sabalenka said. She showed why she is going to be a champion for many years to come. I am disappointed, but matches like this make us both better players.

The victory propels Gauff into her third WTA 1000 final and sets up a championship match against either world number one Iga Swiatek or rising star Emma Navarro, who were scheduled to play in the second semifinal later Friday evening. Gauff has now won her last 12 matches and appears to be hitting peak form at exactly the right time as the tour prepares for the clay court season.

Gauff will enter Sunday final as a slight favorite regardless of her opponent, having shown throughout the tournament that her game has reached new levels of consistency and power. Her ability to save match points against the world number two demonstrates the kind of champion mentality that could propel her to multiple Grand Slam titles in the coming years.
