Foden scores hat-trick as Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1
Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, October 20, in the Champions League. RTÉ reported that Elliot Anderson scored his first goal for the club, with Rayan Cherki also on target as the hosts overcame a brief second-half response from the Greek champions.
Watch the highlights:
Anderson opened the scoring in the 12th minute. According to AS, Enzo Fernández struck the crossbar with a free-kick and Anderson converted the rebound. Foden then combined with Rico Lewis before scoring City's second in the 34th minute. Those goals gave the home side a two-goal advantage at the interval, with both England internationals contributing to the lead.
AEK reduced the deficit seven minutes after the restart when Stavros Pilios scored. The visitors were back within one goal, but that position lasted only five minutes: Cherki made it 3-1 in the 57th minute. Soccerzz's match report confirmed the sequence, with City's response preventing AEK from carrying their early second-half recovery further into the contest.
Foden added his second in the 65th minute and completed his treble in the 76th. Soccerzz credited Lewis and substitute Ryan McAidoo with the assists for those final two goals respectively. The scoring sequence meant City had answered Pilios's goal with three of their own, turning a 2-1 scoreline into a four-goal winning margin before the closing stages.
Sofascore's match breakdown showed City outshooting AEK 10-2 in the first half, while winning five corners and conceding none. The visitors produced more attempts after the break, nine to City's seven, but the hosts scored three times in that period. Sofascore awarded Foden a rating of 10, reflecting a night in which he supplied three of City's five goals.
The hat-trick followed another scoring appearance for Foden at the weekend. Manchester City's official report of their win over Ipswich said he opened the scoring by finishing a Jérémy Doku cutback. That result gave Enzo Maresca seven wins from his first seven Premier League matches of the season. Tuesday's victory added a European success, with Foden again central to the scoring.
