UConn Huskies Secure Big East Tournament Championship with Commanding Victory Over Villanova
Tristen Newton scored 28 points as the defending national champions dominated Villanova 82-65 to claim the automatic bid to March Madness.

The University of Connecticut Huskies stamped their authority on the Big East Conference once again on Friday night, defeating Villanova 82-65 in the tournament championship game at Madison Square Garden to secure the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and send a clear message that they remain the team to beat as March Madness approaches.

Junior guard Tristen Newton was absolutely spectacular throughout the contest, pouring in 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting while adding 8 assists and 6 rebounds in a performance that reminded everyone why he is considered one of the best players in college basketball. Newton controlled the tempo from start to finish, using his experience and basketball IQ to exploit Villanova defensive schemes while creating opportunities for his teammates.

This feels incredible, Newton said while cutting down the nets after the game. To win back-to-back Big East tournaments and get that automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is what we have been working toward all season. Coach Hurley has us believing we can win it all again, and performances like this show we have the talent and chemistry to make another deep run.

UConn head coach Dan Hurley was effusive in his praise for Newton and the entire team after the victory, noting how the group has continued to grow and improve throughout the season despite the pressure of being defending national champions. Tristen was magnificent tonight, but this was a complete team effort, Hurley said. Our defense was outstanding, we shared the basketball beautifully, and we played with the kind of intensity that championship teams need.

The Huskies dominated from the opening tip, building a 15-point halftime lead behind balanced scoring and suffocating defense that held Villanova to just 38% shooting from the field. Sophomore center Donovan Clingan anchored the defense with 4 blocks and 11 rebounds, while seniors Alex Karaban and Cam Spencer provided crucial veteran leadership and timely three-point shooting.

Villanova fought valiantly behind Eric Dixon 22 points and 9 rebounds, but the Wildcats could not match UConn depth and athleticism over 40 minutes. The loss drops Villanova record to 22-11 and likely sends them to the NIT, ending a disappointing season that began with much higher expectations for the storied program.

With the Big East championship secured, UConn now awaits Selection Sunday to learn their seeding and regional placement for the NCAA Tournament. Most experts project the Huskies as a No. 1 seed based on their 29-3 record and impressive resume that includes victories over several top-25 teams. As they prepare to defend their national title, UConn appears to be peaking at exactly the right time and will enter March Madness as one of the clear favorites to cut down the nets in Phoenix next month.
