Super League Confirms Australian Commission Investment Offer

Super League has confirmed receiving an investment offer from the Australian Rugby League Commission, the body behind Australia’s NRL, amid continuing discussions about the future of the European competition. BBC Sport reported that talks between the two sides have been under way since last year, with the Australian proposal intended to help increase Super League revenue.

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus said the process had approached the issue in the wrong way. In an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside, he argued that the discussions should be framed as a chance for the NRL and Super League to build rugby league globally, rather than as an acquisition or rescue of a struggling competition.

McManus acknowledged the sharp contrast between the competitions. He described Australia’s club game as one of world sport’s major successes while saying rugby league in Europe had not been run well for too long. However, he maintained that the European game still offers considerable growth potential and urged the parties to explore how they could combine their strengths.

Rugby Football League managing director Rhodri Jones said in a statement that the governing body was genuinely interested in examining a partnership that would be mutually beneficial and financially fair. Jones added that the RFL believes a single global entity could create significant additional value for the sport. BBC Sport said it had contacted the NRL for comment.

The debate comes as St Helens prepare for another major link with Australian rugby league. The club has appointed Australia head coach Kevin Walters to take charge next season. Walters, 58, has previously coached the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland, and McManus called his decision to join St Helens a major statement for both the club and the incoming coach.

Walters will inherit a side facing an uncertain end to the current campaign. BBC Sport reported that St Helens could miss the Super League play-offs for the first time, while he is set to become the club’s fourth head coach within a year, including interim coach Eamon O’Carroll. McManus said St Helens now need stability followed by success, and believes Walters has the calibre and experience required.
