St Helens Chairman Urges Partnership on Super League Investment

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus has urged Super League and Australia's rugby league authorities to build a joint growth strategy rather than frame their discussions as a rescue or takeover. BBC Sport reported his comments after Super League confirmed this month that it had received an investment offer from the Australian Rugby League Commission.

Talks between the parties have been under way since last year. The Australian commission's proposal is intended to help increase revenue in the European competition, but the available reporting does not establish a completed agreement, its financial value or its final structure. BBC Sport said it had contacted the NRL for comment.

McManus acknowledged that Australia's club competition is far stronger commercially and commands a highly valuable broadcast deal. However, he argued that its room for expansion is constrained by geography and the size of its domestic economy, while European rugby league has considerable untapped growth potential despite having been poorly run for an extended period.

His central position is that the two competitions should combine their strengths without one absorbing the other. McManus also accepted that the prospective relationship would not begin as a partnership of equals, given rugby league's much larger profile in Australia, but said discussions about valuation and club funding should follow agreement on the broader strategic approach.

The Rugby Football League also confirmed its interest in the talks. In a statement reported by the BBC, managing director Rhodri Jones said the RFL wanted to explore a mutually beneficial and financially fair partnership with the NRL. Jones said the governing body believed a single global entity could create additional value for the sport, though no final arrangement was announced.

The debate comes as St Helens prepare for a significant coaching change. The club has appointed Australia head coach Kevin Walters to take charge next season. The 58-year-old has previously coached Brisbane Broncos and Queensland, winning the State of Origin series with Queensland in 2016 and 2017. He is set to become St Helens' fourth head coach within a year, including current interim coach Eamon O'Carroll, as the club faces the possibility of missing the Super League play-offs for the first time. McManus said the appointment was intended to restore stability and success.
