Jordan Spieth Claims WM Phoenix Open in Dramatic Playoff Victory
Jordan Spieth captured his first PGA Tour victory since 2022, defeating world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland in a thrilling sudden-death playoff to win the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Texan holed a clutch 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, the par-4 18th, to claim his 13th career PGA Tour title in front of the tournament's famously raucous crowd. Spieth's emotional celebration with his caddie Michael Greller brought tears to his eyes as he ended a lengthy victory drought.
"This means everything to me," Spieth said through tears during the trophy ceremony. "I've been through some tough times the last couple years, and to win here at Phoenix, in front of this incredible crowd, it's just special. Michael and I have been grinding, and this validates all the hard work."
All three players finished regulation at 15-under-par after a tense final round that saw multiple lead changes. Scheffler appeared in control with a two-shot advantage heading into the back nine, but a double bogey at the 15th hole opened the door for his competitors.
Hovland briefly took the lead with birdies at 16 and 17, while Spieth made a spectacular eagle at the par-5 15th to surge into contention. The Norwegian's bogey at 18 and Spieth's clutch par putt forced the three-way playoff, setting up one of the most dramatic finishes in recent Phoenix Open history.
The victory moves Spieth back into the top 20 of the world rankings and provides crucial momentum as he prepares for the major championship season. His emotional win also marks a significant turnaround for a player who had struggled with consistency in recent years, suggesting that the former world No. 1 may be ready to challenge for golf's biggest prizes once again.
